NSRI Bakoven, Cape Town

Alterations & repair - completed 2002

Working with community organisations is immensely rewarding. We get to meet all the people who give selflessly of their time and we get to give some of our time in return.

Bakoven is one of our favourite places in the world and we jumped at the opportunity of being part of the design team tasked to assist with the repairs to the National Sea Rescue Institute station. Our structural engineer designed a wave deflection curve for the lower perimeter of the building. The principle is that the curve deflects the speed of the incoming waves and minimise the impact force and resulting damage.

The City of Cape Town was very particular about the materials used and the visual impact of the alterations on the surrounding structures. We are very proud of the low impact but highly effective design solution that we have achieved.
