3 Storey Apartments with naturally ventilated Basement - completed 2006
This building is close to the University of Cape Town, on a significantly sloping site on Main Road. The Loping site allowed us to design a naturally ventilated basement with a three accommodation levels above. The building is a simple rectangular shape that maximises the allowed footprint within the prescribed building line setbacks.
We played with the architectural language of the surrounding neighbourhood by contrasting the design of the upper level with the solid based, more conventional lower levels. The upper level is an unconventional and creative responses to the urban fabric.
Securing the perimeter was not part of our initial brief and we realised that services and features added as an afterthought to a small building footprint is not optimal.
