New Warehouse to Irradiation Facility - completed 2007
Industrial buildings are definitely a passion of ours and we grab every opportunity to become involved in the planning of these very functional spaces. This project introduced us to the workings of an irradiation plant. The existing premises were limiting our client in the use of the rest of the site and restricted the flow of product on the premises.
We assisted the client by creating a separate delivery area, with industrial scales built into the delivery floor area. Protecting the merchandise from the South Easterly wind and driving rain while loading and unloading was another design consideration. The existing building was converted into a dispatch bay with new accounting offices and waiting areas for customers. We designed a double story internal office area and canteen area for the staff.
We loved this project because the design brief was purely functional. It would be a wonderful challenge to see what design measures can be incorporated into the existing design to encourage the use of as much “green” technology as possible in the industrial production process, what the cost of these interventions are and what the savings on running cost for our industrial client could be.
